AHC: Both Old and New Worlds Controlled by Set of Empires

By this, a scenario where the vast majority of the Old and new world is under the control of a set of empires or as a satellite of the same.

Is such extension logistically and politically possible or financially sustainable in to at least the 1950s?

Also with modernization and the development of some of the empires towards a more modernizing structure, or at least ones that give natives an equal voice in representation, will independence in our sense become a lot rarer since the reformed empires can still continue elements of the old direct rule, protectorate, client system?

Other empires are likely to collapse or fracture
